Local companies make Top 100

Saskatchewan Business Magazine has unveiled its Top 100 Companies for 2014 and two Yorkton businesses have made the grade.

Maple Farm Equipment and Yorkton Coop were respectively 39th and 67th on the list.

The ranking is based on gross sales revenue, explained Twila Reddekopp, publisher and editor of the magazine. She said it has been a tough slog over the years to get Saskatchewan businesses involved because they tend not to want to blow their own horns. Slowly, but surely, though, companies are coming on board and sharing their sales figures.

"Because we're still quietly proud of what we do, people don't want to share much more than that," she said.

In deference to that attitude, she does not publish the numbers.

Ken Hitchings, general manager at Maple, did not want to talk numbers, but said they were proud to be on the list.

"We always try to grow our company and increase its size through customer service and customer satisfaction," he said. "That's what we're about."

Bruce Thurston, general manager of the Coop, was also pleased.

"Any time when you're in a pretty elite group like that, the 67th biggest company in the province, that's quite an accomplishment," he said. "We're quite proud of that."

He said expansion of the business is somewhat limited by the geographic service area, but they are always looking for ways to expand and pick up market share to make money for their membership.

Reddekopp said she hoped Maple and the Coop's involvement will encourage other area businesses to get involved in the annual process.

"We truly appreciate their participation," she said. "We need more people like them."
