The Yorkton municipal RCMP is one of five detachments participating in a social media pilot project.
The idea is to connect with people in the community much in the same way officers would chat with people in a coffee shop, according to Sgt. Craig Cleary of "F" Division.
The pilot kicked off January 14. Local officers are posting information about busts and using it to promote things such as the force's recruiting campaign and its "name the puppy contest.
They are also using it to raise awareness of public safety issues such as an online drinking game called Neknominate, which police say has had dangerous consequences.
So far, then program has been well-received in the community. The Yorkton detachment has racked up more than 500 Facebook 'Likes' and 250 Twitter followers.
Cleary explained the impetus for the project was the successful "F" Division social media implementation, which has served the province at large for the past two years. On New Year's Eve, for example, the force tweeted all of its 911 calls.
Cleary said officers in the five detachments are tech savvy and really embracing the project.
