Three organizations in the city have joined forces to host Culture Days, and Monday Tonia Vermette, Administrator of the Yorkton Arts Council, one of the three, appeared before Yorkton Council.
Culture Days is a pan-Canadian program that takes place every September.
On behalf of the YAC, the Yorkton Film Festival and Free My Muse Theatre Company, Vermette requested Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, be proclaimed Culture Days in the city. Council was unanimous in supporting the request.
On Oct. 1, a program to experience music, theatre and film will be held at the Yorkton Regional High School.
Activities will include a photography workshop, monologue performances, a concert by Andion Suns, Mini Cinema, acting and drumming workshops.
Then on Oct. 19, a ‘Story Slam” will be held at the Yorkton Public Library, said Vermette.
“Yorkton Story Slam is a new program presented through the partnership of the Parkland Writers Alliance, the Yorkton Public Library and the Yorkton Arts Council. This event is a story telling competition. Similar competitions are held in larger cities (Edmonton and Toronto),” detailed material circulated Monday.
“Each session consists of 10 writers presenting their stories. All stories presented must be original and unpublished. Authors will each have five minutes to read or tell their stories. After five minutes a one point penalty will be issued. After seven minutes the author will be gonged and asked to leave the podium. There is no age limit or theme. Just keep in mind that we intend this to be family friendly.
“Stories will be judged by a panel of five local celebrity judges. Marks will be issued out of 10 for each story. The highest and lowest marks will be knocked off with the remaining three marks averaged together for the final mark.”
