A charge of first degree murder has been laid in connection to the death of Yorkton's Jimmy Ray Wiebe.
Twenty-year-old Kyle Braeden Furness of Yorkton was arrested on Thursday evening and charged with first degree murder the following day. The arrest was made on 6th Avenue North without incident.
Furness appeared in Yorkton's Provincial Court on Monday morning. He was remanded into custody until August 4, when he will make a second appearance via video.
Jimmy Wiebe's body was discovered at the Shell service station in which he worked during the early morning hours of June 20. Police have released no details on the nature of the 50-year-old's death except to confirm that it was a homicide.
A widespread investigation between the Yorkton General Investigation Section and the Regina Major Crimes Unit followed the discovery. RCMP put out a call for tips from the public and knocked on doors in the neighborhoods surrounding the gas station. Two security camera photos showing a masked suspect entering the convenience store were released.
On Friday, police thanked the public for the numerous tips they have received concerning the case.
The investigation continues, but RCMP have not indicated whether more arrests might be forthcoming.
A candlelight vigil for Wiebe on Thursday night was attended by more than 150 mourners. Wiebe's funeral was on Friday afternoon.
