Tourism Yorkton president Neil Thom presented the organization's annual report to the regular meeting of City Council Monday.

Thom said tourism remains important to the local economy.

"According to the Tourism Saskatchewan database, Yorkton has over 1300 people who are employed in Tourism related industries, 93 tourism businesses and 21 events. Combine that with $37 million spent in the area and tourism plays an important role in the city's economy," he said.

It is Tourism Yorkton's role to promote the local activity.

"Tourism Yorkton works diligently to promote the tourism stakeholders in the city. Through co-ordinated strategic partnerships, we were involved in $135,000 marketing dollars invested to attract new visitors to our community. The Visitor Information Centre continues to provide complimentary year round information on Yorkton and the surrounding area," said Thom.

Thom said the City certainly plays an important role in terms of supporting tourism.

"I would like to take a moment to thank the members of council for your support. Your partnership ensures Tourism Yorkton continues to be a driving force in the development and marketing of Yorkton as a first class, four season destination. The city is bustling with economic activity and from Tourism Yorkton's standpoint, City Council is working hard behind the scenes to make Yorkton a great place to live and visit. Your contribution to the recently launched Western Canadian Crop Interpretive Centre will bring huge dividends. The centre will showcase Saskatchewan's prominence in agriculture and provide a one-of-a-kind attraction," he said.

The provincial government has also been proactive in supporting the sector, said Thom.

"I would also like to take a moment to recognize the provincial governments initiatives this past year. More funding for Tourism Saskatchewan, a tremendous revitalization in our provincial parks and changes to not start the school year until after the September long weekend bodes well for our industry," he said.

Locally Thom said the organization will continue to fulfill its role.

"For 2012 Tourism Yorkton will continue to promote the city, develop capacity and advocate for our members," he said.
