A section of Highway 10 East will see lower speed limits established following a unanimous decision of Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.
"The Ministry of Highways has discussed with administration the possibility of reducing the speed limit along Hwy #10 East. The growth anticipated in this area over the next five years merits consideration of this request," detailed a report circulated to Council.
"The information available from the Transportation Master Plan indicates that 2350 vehicles utilize this roadway daily. Administration anticipates the number of turning movements along this roadway will increase as highway commercial develops in an area that is presently vacant.
"Administration prefers to be proactive in reducing the speed so that as development occurs in this area of the community, motorists are already adjusted to the reduced speed along this corridor."
At the recommendation of the Protective Services Committee and the Planning and Infrastructure Commission, Council voted to change the speed limit along Highway #10 East, with a 70 kph zone from the city limits to approximately New Holland, a 60 kph zone from approximately New Holland to "Husky Road" then is transitioning to a 50 kph. Implementation will include advertising and notice to the public.
