Maloney seeking another term

Bob Maloney has officially declared he will seek re-election to the position of Mayor in the upcoming civic election.

“I think good things are happening in the City of Yorkton,” he said Monday at a press conference held at City Hall.

And Maloney, who is seeking his second term as Mayor, said the good things that are happening, are at least in part due to the efforts of the current Council.

“This is a Council that has got things done,” he offered.

Maloney pointed to the response to the flood of 2010, and the floods which have occurred since. He said Council saw an issue, and have invested millions in drainage and water control projects to help mitigate the issue moving forward.

When it comes to the citizens of Yorkton, Maloney said they have made it clear when he has talked to them that they don’t want water in their basements, and they do want good streets and roads, and that has been a Council focus.

“These kinds of decisions have been a hallmark of Council,” he said.

Maloney said investing in flood controls, streets and roads have certainly been a priority, adding that is the sort of work which moves forward “with experience people around the table.”

While crediting Council as a unit, and having three sitting Councillors in attendance at the press conference, Maloney said the existing roster of Council are not running as a ‘slate’ of candidates.

He said they may have worked well together to address issues in the last for years, but are individuals in terms of decision making.

What the group does offer is experience, each exiting member of Council with near a decade of experience, or more.

“I never discount experience, especially when experience is getting the job done,” he said. “I say unequivocally we’ve been getting the job done.”

That work has included putting Yorkton in a strong financial position, said Maloney, adding among Saskatchewan small cities “none are in a better position than Yorkton to respond to issues and concerns.”

The groundwork laid by Council has helped with overall community growth, which has meant “a tremendous amount of investment in the city,” adding he believes “… the positive growth we have seen will continue.”

That does not mean the next Council will not face issues, but Maloney said the City is in a good position to deal with whatever comes.

“I think we’re ready for the challenges,” he said.
