Adjourned

A 49-year-old Yorkton man accused of producing and possessing child pornography has been released from custody on $5,000 bail.

Karl Vopni appeared before a Yorkton Provincial Court judge on February 5 charged with one count each of making child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Vopni was arrested early last week following a months-long  joint investigation with the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (ICE).  Local RCMP and ICE are not releasing any details of the arrest or investigation as it is ongoing and the safety of possible victims is their overriding priority, said Cpl. Terry Hyggen of the Yorkton municipal detachment.

The Crown agreed to Vopni’s release on the basis of the $5,000 non-cash deposit and 15 conditions.

Conditions include living at an approved address, abiding by a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew, not consuming or possessing alcohol or non-prescription drugs, having no contact with persons under the age of 16, not being present at any location frequented by persons under the age of 16, not possessing pornography of any kind, and a prohibition on possessing or owning any electronic device connected to the Internet.

The charges are indictable offences, which carry a minimum jail term of one year and a maximum of 14 years on conviction.

The case has been adjourned to March 1.
