A 50-year-old gas station employee was the victim of a homicide in Yorkton during the early morning hours of June 20.
Jimmy Ray Wiebe, a 10-year employee of the Shell station on Smith Street East, was attacked while working at the store sometime between 1:30 and 4:50 am on Monday.
Police have released no details on the nature of the crime, but report that Wiebe was discovered at 4:50 am by a customer of the store. He had succumbed to "serious injuries" by this time.
Yorkton RCMP are now seeking information from anyone who was in the area, either on foot or in a vehicle, between the hours of 1:30 and 5:00 am.
"The public is advised to remember that even seemingly insignificant information may be relevant to this investigation," reads the RCMP release.
Wiebe, a devoted Edmonton Eskimos fan, also worked for the last 12 years in Yorkton This Week's mailroom. Mailroom Manager Jim Kinaschuk called him a hard-working employee with a good sense of humor.
It was Wiebe's last week at the gas station before the store transferred to new management.
Police set up a perimeter around the Shell building on Monday while the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit, Yorkton GIS, Yorkton RCMP Police Dog Services, and Regina Major Crimes Unit investigated.
The RCMP Major Crime Unit along with Yorkton RCMP are releasing a photograph from the surveillance video equipment at the Shell gas station and convenience store located at 140 Smith Street East in Yorkton, SK. The subject identified in the attached photograph is considered a suspect in the Homicide of 50 year old Yorkton resident, Jimmy Ray WIEBE. Investigators are seeking the public's assistance relating not only to the identity of this person but also any information in relation to the type of clothing being worn by this individual or the size and/or stance of the person in the photo. Some of these clothing items may be familiar to the public and they are advised to bring this information to the attention of the Police. Even seemingly minor information from the public may be of tremendous significance to the investigation. If the public has any information in relation to this picture they are encouraged to contact police. The suspect appears average build, approximately 5'5" - 5'10", wearing a dark colored ball cap and black clothing.
