Two people are missing after their pickup truck was swept into the Whitesand River approximately three miles north of Springside on Sunday night.

The driver of the truck was attempting to cross a low-level river crossing on a grid road at approximately 8:30 pm when the vehicle became caught in the water flowing over the road.

According to police, the 65-year-old male driver managed to escape from the vehicle, make his way to shore, and summon help. He did not know if the other two male passengers of the vehicle had been able to escape.

The Canora RCMP Detachment called in firefighters and the Yorkton RCMP Police Dog Service to assist in the search of the gully and downstream riverbanks for the passengers. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was also called in to search the river. As of press time, the RCMP had not reported locating either the truck or the two missing occupants.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested in connection to the investigation, but he was released on Monday without charge.
