Slow progress
It has been said that the wheels of justice turn slowly. This is certainly true in the murder case of Jaycee Mildenberger.
The Usherville man is accused of murdering Gwenda Gregory in March, 2009. It took nearly three years for police to crack the case, but they eventually arrested Mildenberger in June 2009.
Since then he has been in jail on remand. March 3 was to be the beginning of a voirdire and Charter of Rights and Freedoms application at Court of Queen's Bench in Yorkton, but the case did not proceed.
That hearing, which had been scheduled for the next two weeks is now set for September 15, the original trial date. A new trial date is set for January 12 2015.
Luring case adjourned
A Saltcoats man remains in custody on charges of luring a child, obstruction of justice, intimidating a justice system participant and numerous breaches of an undertaking following a hearing Monday.
Nathan Penner was originally charged in August 2013 with sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching involving a 14-year-old. Police allege the 38-year-old business owner attempted to contact the victim in January and convince the teen to drop the charges.
A trial is set for April 8 on the original charges. A new hearing on the subsequent charges is scheduled for March 10 at which time Penner's defence attorney said he believed he and the Crown will have worked out a suitable disposition of the new charges.
