A notoriously violent offender who allegedly murdered one teen and abducted another last week remains in custody following his first appearance in Lac La Ronge court Monday.

Jonas Budd is accused of shooting and killing 17-year old Dustin Bird early in the morning of February 18, then abducting the young man’s girlfriend Kayla Natomagan from her home on the Lac la Ronge First Nation.

It has been reported that Natomagan is the daughter of Budd’s former common-law partner.

RCMP immediately issued an amber alert for the girl who was located in Manitoba by members of the Cranberry Portage RCMP detachment a few hours later near The Pas. They said Budd, who was considered to be armed and dangerous fled into the bush on foot.

After a 24-hour manhunt, police received a tip that Budd was holed up in Sturgeon Landing Saskatchewan, a border town south of Flin Flon. Police surrounded the residence, which they believe was once owned by Budd’s father.

A 20-hour standoff ensued before Budd finally gave himself up without incident.

As the 43-year-old was appearing in court February 23, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix reported the man has a long violent history dating to the early 1990s, including a prior armed standoff with police.

Budd is charged with the first-degree murder of Bird, kidnapping with a weapon, breaking and entering, uttering threats, pointing a weapon, possessing a dangerous weapon and possessing a firearm while prohibited.

After a brief appearance in Lac la Ronge court, Budd was remanded in custody until March 30.
