The Saskatchewan Music Alliance is bringing a summer camp to Yorkton.
The SMA, (which includes the Saskatchewan Band Association, the Saskatchewan Choral Federation, the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association, and the Saskatchewan Orchestral Association), are in the business of promoting and encouraging musical involvement and activity for all Saskatchewan residents as part of a healthy lifestyle that includes personal fulfillment and accomplishment.
The Saskatchewan Music Alliance is taking a leadership role in expanding musical opportunities available to inner city youth. We appreciate the opportunity to work with both SaskCulture and the Dream Broker Program, to provide this summer music camp!
The SMA Summer Music Camp started in 2012. Originally it was offered to students in just Regina and Saskatoon, but has expanded since to accommodate the growing interest and demand within the province.
This year a camp will be held Thursday, Aug 17 at Dr. Brass School, including a concert at 1:30 p.m..
Camp Goals:
• Provide an introduction to various musical instruments and ways of making music.
• Remove or reduce barriers to participation by recognizing and accommodating the needs of children and youth attending inner city schools.
• Increase family participation in the activities of children and youth and develop their capacity to sustain ongoing involvement.
• Promote benefits of participation in culture, sport and recreation programming to children, youth and families.
• Encourage an increased number of existing culture, sport and recreation programs / organizations.
• Provide Dream Brokers an additional summer programming option for their use in enhancing relationships with the children and families within their communities.
Follow up from previous years has shown that the camp has a lasting effect on its participants: Approximately 30 per cent of the youth who participate continue their music instruction in the fall.
