New fire command truck changes

A new command vehicle for the Yorkton Fire Department will be a Chevy, not a Ford as previously reported.

A new command vehicle for the Yorkton Fire Department will be a Chevy, not a Ford as previously reported.

In a report to City council at its regular meeting June 10, Chief Dean Clark explained a mistake in the Request for Proposal process had negated the department's original recommendation to purchase a 2013 Ford 150 4X4 crew cab from Royal Ford.

The truck specification in the original RFP allowed the City to add or delete options providing the original price was honoured and the other two companies that provided proposals were notified. This did not happen and all three companies were invited to submit new proposals.

In the new evaluation, a GMC 1500 Silverado came out on top using the Public Works Department's rating schedule with 1107 points compared to the Ford's 992 points. It also beat out the Ford in terms of price at $30,106 compared to $32,205.

Four councillors grilled Clark and Deputy Chief Greg Litvanyi on why they couldn't go with the low bid, a Nissan Titan "S" crew cab at $26,100.

Litvanyi explained that the Nissan was simply unsuitable as it did not include a tow package or skid plates and failed in the fuel economy category.

The firefighters apparently answered all of the questions satisfactorily as the motion to approve the new recommendation passed unanimously.

Before the recommendation could be accepted, however, council had to rescind its original approval of the Ford bid.
