Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd has welcomed the news by Canpotex of a new railcar maintenance and staging facility in the province for its operations.
Canpotex, the international marketing agency for Saskatchewan's potash, today announced that construction will begin next month on the estimated $55 million facility at a site 12 kilometres southwest of Lanigan in the Rural Municipality of Usborne.
"This is great news for the Lanigan area and for all of Saskatchewan," Boyd said. "Canpotex is recognized as the world leader in potash marketing, logistics and distribution. This new project is an important step in maintaining and enhancing Canpotex's position."
Canpotex uses about 5,000 railcars specifically designed to carry potash through the rugged terrain and severe climate changes between Saskatchewan and the west coast. The new facility means more maintenance of those railcars will take place in Saskatchewan.
The facility will also result in approximately 20 new permanent jobs as well as around 40 new jobs during construction.
Boyd said the ongoing expansion of the Saskatchewan potash industry through new investments and now a new railcar maintenance and staging facility is clear evidence that the government's potash policies are working and that the industry is moving forward.
"Potash is a major driver of the Saskatchewan economy, employing thousands of people throughout our province," Boyd said. "Our government is committed to the continued growth of the potash industry in our province."
