Stoll charged

The Clark County, Nevada district attorney’s office has proceeded with formal felony possession of cocaine charges on former Yorkton hockey star and two-time Stanley Cup champion Jaret Stoll.

Stoll was arrested April 17 after a routine search turned up 3.3 grams of coke and some capsules of ecstasy in the LA Kings forward’s pocket.

On Monday, Steven Wolfson, the district attorney, charged Stoll with one count of felony possession of a controlled substance. He did not comment of why the charge included only cocaine.

Stoll’s lawyer, David Chesnoff, is hoping to conclude the case quickly out of court. Nevada law carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison or probation for a first possession offence.

Former teacher faces suspension

A former Yorkton special education teacher could be suspended for up to a year following a Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) penalty hearing June 22.

Good Spirit School Division fired Jesse Baron, of Saltcoats, in November of last year after an administrator discovered Baron had posted racist and sexually explicit material on social media.

In May, the STF ethics committee considered the case and recommended suspension until June 30, 2016.

On Monday, the executive held a hearing to consider the recommendation. It had not made its decision public as of press time.

Coke bust

Two Yorkton residents have been charged with cocaine trafficking following an RCMP investigation June 18.

Tyson Blahey, 34, and Michelle Hamelin, 30, face several charges including trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, breach of probation and obstruction.

The arrests came after a traffic stop and search of a Yorkton residence turned up approximately 48 grams of cocaine, an amount RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Nichol characterized as significant for a city the size of Yorkton.

Both suspects appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court June 22. Blahey was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing June 30. Hamelin was released on conditions and scheduled to appear again July 6.
