No Target store for Yorkton on the horizon

American retailer Target Corporation has announced a list of the first 125 Canadian locations where it plans to open stores, and Yorkton is not included.

American retailer Target Corporation has announced a list of the first 125 Canadian locations where it plans to open stores, and Yorkton is not included.

In 2011, Target purchased the lease agreements of 189 Zellers stores across Canada, including Yorkton's, with intentions to reopen most of these locations as Target stores after the existing Zellers stores close.

Yorkton's Zellers is now in the late stages of closing out, but no plans have been announced to replace it with a Target.

The first 125 Canadian Target stores will begin opening in March/April of 2013. In Saskatchewan, one store is confirmed for Regina and two for Saskatoon.

Target representatives offer no details about their plans regarding Yorkton, but have stated their intentions to announce a handful of additional store openings planned for 2014. News of those stores will be announced "later this year."

Based on previous statements from Target Corporation, up to ten of the remaining Zellers leases could be announced as future Target locations, while the final 13-25 will be sold to other retailers or returned to the landlords who own the properties. It is unknown which option the corporation will choose for the Yorkton site.
