Older persons get their day in city

Yorkton Council passed a declaration at its regular meeting Monday to mark Oct. 1, as the Day of Older Persons in the city.

Yorkton Council passed a declaration at its regular meeting Monday to mark Oct. 1, as the Day of Older Persons in the city.

The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution in December 1991 which laid out the UN Principles of Older Persons, explained Mike Kaminski, second vice president of the National Pensioners Federation who made the request for the declaration.

“That resolution included 18 principles which promote Independence, Participation, Care, Self-Fulfilment and Dignity,” he explained.

The UN encourages Governments to incorporate these principles into their national programmes whenever possible which Canada has recognized in 2010, by recognizing Oct 1 as Nation Seniors Day.

Kaminski said it is important that provincial and municipal governments also tale time to make the recognition of the needs and contributions of older persons (generally those 50 and older).
