The Gallagher Centre will be host to the first speaking engagement of Mark Tewksbury, chef de mission of Team Canada at the London Summer Olympic Games, following his return to Canada.
The Good Spirit School Division has booked Tewksbury-a gold, silver, and bronze medalist in swimming events at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games-to deliver a motivational speech to all school division staff members at the unveiling of its new five-year strategic plan on Wednesday, August 29.
Tickets to the event are available to the public through the division's administration office (786-5500) at a cost of $20. The function begins at 10 am and goes over lunch.
Tewksbury, a 44-year-old Calgary native, returned to Canada at the start of this week after spending 17 days as leader and mentor to the Canadian Olympic Team.
The school division is "excited" to hear from the Olympian and to unveil its new strategic plan, said Director of Education Dwayne Reeve.
"[The plan] looks at not only our key priorities, but a revisit of our mission, vision, and values, as well. We've heard very clearly from our staff and public and students what they want us to be, and we're looking forward to letting people know what those revisions are."
Tewksbury was chosen to address the crowd both for his renown as a public speaker and for his suitability to the division's message, said Reeve.
"Part of the reason we chose him is the fact that some of the training that he had to do required some mid-course changes to get extremely positive results. That fits very well with the main theme of what we're doing."
The event will be only the second time that all GSSD staff have been brought together since the division's creation in 2006.
