The City of Yorkton made a move Monday designed to clean up its bylaw books just a bit.

At the regular meeting of Council a bylaw to repeal a number of out-of-date bylaws was unanimously passed.

“A bylaw that is in effect can only be cancelled by a repealing bylaw. When a bylaw has no further need, action or consequence it is redundant and should be repealed,” explained City Clerk Kathy Ritchie.

“A project that has been undertaken by the City Clerk’s Office is to clean up the current bylaws by identifying those that are obsolete, expired or were neglected to be repealed when being replaced with another bylaw and move them into the Repealed Bylaws file.

“This will be a lengthy project that will entail a review of all bylaws, identifying those that require to be repealed and at the end of each calendar year requesting council to approve the Repealing Bylaw. Also it is noted that there should only be one repealing bylaw in the bylaw register at any given time and thus the most current repealing bylaw should include provisions to cancel any other repealing bylaw(s).”
