Parkland College handed out more than $68,000 in scholarships last week. The awards, ranging from $200 to $2,000, recognize a wide variety of student achievement from scholastic excellence to community service.
The scholarships are made possible through donations from east central Saskatchewan businesses, service clubs, municipalities, individuals, college staff, the provincial government and fundraising events such as the annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic.
The awards were presented during a scholarship tea at Painted Hand Casino March 27. In all, 71 students received cheques.
Combined with the $40,000 in entrance scholarships awarded in September this marks the second consecutive year the college has given out more than $100,000.
Parkland particularly acknowledges the contribution of the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship Program, which provided matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis for many of the scholarships.
The provincial government introduced the fund in 2011 specifically to support educational institutions' strategic goals. For Parkland College the overriding goal is to develop programs in response to the needs of the community.
