Anhydrous truck rollover closes highways
On May 17, members of the Punnichy RCMP detachment and the Raymore Fire Department responded to a report of a semi-trailer rolling into the ditch at the intersection of Highways 6 and 15. The semi carried 11,232 kg of anhydrous ammonia.
The trailer's tanks were not leaking, but all traffic on Highways 6 and 15 was stopped at Raymore and Southey while the anhydrous ammonia was transferred to another tanker. An area within approximately two kilometers of the accident scene was evacuated during the transfer.
Anhydrous ammonia may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin. The vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive.
The highway was reopened by early the next day.
