Pink day declared in Yorkton

Yorkton Council has proclaimed Wednesday, April 13 as Pink Day in the city. Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia in schools and communities.

Yorkton Council has proclaimed Wednesday, April 13 as Pink Day in the city.

Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia in schools and communities.

The request, which was heard at the regular meeting of Council Monday, was made by the Yorkton Understanding Minds of Many Youth (YUMMY) group.

"Are you against bullying, discrimination and homophobia in your community?" asked YUMMY spokesperson Meaghann White.

"Have you ever seen a friend hurt because of discrimination? Have you been hurt yourself?"
White said the day addresses such discrimination.

"Discrimination comes in many forms including; racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism and anit-semitism, just to name a few. These social diseases create barriers, bullying, harassment, hate and violence. No one should have to experience the negativity created by discrimination. Day of Pink is more than just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity - it is also a commitment to being open-minded, accepting differences and learning to respect each other," she said.

Delyse Kormos, also with YUMMY explained about the idea of Pink Day.

"The International Day of Pink was born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination, bullying and homophobia," she said.

"Since bullying and its threat are depriving many children and adults of their right to live and work in a peaceful and supportive environment, we respectfully request that Yorkton City Council support the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia and declare Wednesday, April 13, as Yorkton Pink Day."

The request received the unanimous consent of Council.
