Planning bus service amalgamation

The City of Yorkton will enter into formal talks with the Saskatchewan Abilities Council (SAC) regarding amalgamation of transit services in the city.

"Saskatchewan Abilities desires to amalgamate the transit systems in the City. Saskatchewan Abilities, the City and Client Transit (SIGN) operate transit services in the community. Amalgamation of services may provide economies of scale to this service," explained a report circulated to the regular meeting of Council Monday from Gord Shaw, Director of Planning & Engineering.

Shaw said while preliminary talks had taken place, the consent of Council was required to enter more formalized negotiations.

Currently the Saskatchewan Abilities Council operates Access Transit ($199,000 annual expenditure) and Client Transit ($90,000 annual expenditure). The City of Yorkton operates City Public Transit ($139,133 annual expenditure).

In a letter from SAC it was suggested "by combining City Public Transit, Access Transit and Client Transit into one integrated service delivery system, efficiencies will emerge as the three previously distinct services are treated as one integrated service under one consistent management structure and marketing plan."

The plan also calls for the establishment of a SAC Community Transit Advisory Committee detailed the letter.

"The committee would be comprised of passengers, contract customers, drivers and business leaders.

The committee would meet on a quarterly basis to review and suggest further efficiency and effectiveness strategies."
