Police and SGI continued a no tolerance policy on dangerous driving habits during August issuing more than 3,700 speeding tickets and 319 for distracted driving.

Cell phone use remains the number one distracted driving offence with 228 citations. Another 91 tickets were given out for driving without due care and attention.

"SGI reminds motorists that immediate roadside vehicle seizures are now in effect for distracted driving offences on the second offence within one year for cellphone use while driving, and the third offence within one year for driving without due care and attention," a press release stated.

In addition to regular traffic enforcement, police from all over the province assembled in Estevan for a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event August 27 and 28 focussing on seatbelts, cellphones, aggressive driving and impaired driving. They handed out 37 tickets for speeding, 32 for improper seatbelt use, 21 for cellphone use and 55 for failing to stop at a red light or stop sign.

STEP also involves a child passenger safety component. During the weekend, SGI car seat technicians checked 92 child restraints and gave away 12 car seats and booster seats.

Parents are reminded that new regulations are now effect regarding child restraints. Information on all of Saskatchewan's new traffic laws are available at www.sgi.sk.ca.
