There’s only one thing you’re supposed to be doing when you are driving. Driving.

That was the focus of SGI’s traffic safety blitz for February.

During February, police issued 245 tickets for distracted driving, 184 of which were for cell phone use. Two vehicles were seized.

Two years ago, distracted driving, primarily the use of cell phones, became the top cause of driving related injury and death, surpassing drunk driving for the first time in history.

SGI reminds motorists to focus on the task of driving while behind the wheel,” stated a press release. “The only multi-tasking required in the driver’s seat is for things that relate to driving, for example scanning mirrors, looking ahead for hazards and paying attention to your surroundings. If you must send a text or take a call, pull over safely to the side of the road before doing so.”

In addition, law enforcement handed out 1,072 tickets for speeding/aggressive driving; 397 for failing to stop at a red light or stop sign; 301 for occupant restraint violations, and there were 75 impaired driving-related offences.

Continuing through the end of March, officers will be focussing on occupant restraint.

SGI reminds motorists that proper use of seatbelts and child safety restraint systems save lives every day.
