The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has selected its new president. Mike Popowich is going to lead the Chamber in 2018.

Popowich previously served as vice-president in 2017 and as an events coordinator. Popowich is also the co-owner of TA Foods Inc. in Yorkton. He wanted to assume the role as he viewed it as the next step in volunteering.

“It’s a lot of history and leadership that have been shown, and it will be nice to continue that on.”

This year is one which will see a few changes, and the Chamber wants to watch closely given that the province now has a new premier. The Chamber wants to see what is going to happen with the provincial budget, especially with how it will affect the city.

“Brad Wall has been there for a few terms already, and having somebody new in there will bring in a few changes to the budget that will be released. That will affect the city’s budget as well, and there will be issues similar to those in our town hall meeting on property taxes last year that we will have to discuss with business members and chamber members.”

There are also concerns about what is going to happen with NAFTA, especially when it comes to the agricultural producers in the region and how they are going to be affected.

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has been around since 1898, and Popowich is proud to take on the role in its 120th year of operation. The Chamber will be hosting the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce AGM in May, and the

Chamber Business Dinner will be moved to May to tie into that as well as into celebrations for the big anniversary.

“It’s a long tradition of solid community business leadership.”

Popowich is proud of everyone involved in the organization and everyone who has been involved over the decades.

“The Yorkton Chamber is a fantastic organization. We have 120 years of knowledge and experience, we have an extremely solid staff at the Yorkton Chamber, we’re lucky to have the staff that we have there, Juanita [Polegi] and Sherry [MacDonald]. The support of the city has also been key in allowing the Chamber to do the things that we do and remain very active in the community for the businesses.”
