It was a good 2014 in terms of tourism in Yorkton, and things look set for a good 2015 ahead.

That was the message Yorkton Council heard at its regular meeting from Tourism Yorkton chair Neil Thom.

“Our goal is to see Yorkton’s travel and tourism sector realize its full potential and continually raise awareness of our sectors significant contribution to Yorkton’s economic prosperity,” Thom reminded Council.

“To achieve this goal we are continually striving to improve our member driven organization.”

Thom said the organization also seeks to be innovative in its efforts.

“We constantly look for new and unique ways to promote Yorkton’s services, attractions and facilities,” he said.

And, at the same time they continue to carry forward what has been successful.

“We work with CTC (Canadian Tourism Commission) to provide input for our industry. We also continue to take a lead role in education and training by partnering with the Parkland College and STEC to provide business skills training for Yorkton’s businesses,” said Thom.

In terms of the past year Thom said some important steps were taken in terms of promoting tourism.

Thom said, “2014 also saw a complete revamp of our website and a strong focus on social media.

“We were also able to provide expanded hours of operation along with increased staffing at the reception centre due to a pilot project with additional funding from the provincial government. Progress was also made with our Community Action Plan launched in 2013. This plan will help to ensure we increase tourism expenditures and identify new opportunities for the Parkland Region in 2015.”

The numbers for the past year show a good response to the organization’s efforts.

“Welcoming almost 15,000 visitors to our reception centre, preparing 2,500 welcome packages for convention attendees, and replying to over 500 visitor information request, Tourism Yorkton is working hard behind the scenes to grow revenues,” said Thom.

The current year looks to continue the history of good numbers.

Thom noted, “2015 looks to be a great year for Tourism. In February we will be hosting the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Associations annual meet. A big thank you from Tourism Yorkton to the Mayor, Councillors and city staff who have gone out of their way to make sure all the sledders have a great time in Yorkton.

April will see Yorkton hosting the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards and this year will see an expanded Parkland Outdoor Hunt & Fish Show as well.”
