A Yorkton youth has pleaded guilty to unauthorized possession of a firearm and careless use of a firearm and was sentenced to nine months probation.
The teen, who cannot be named due to a Youth Justice Act publication ban appeared in court Monday.
On December 5, 2016, the RCMP received a report of a gun fired on First Avenue North near York Road. On the scene, police found a parked vehicle with a gunshot hole in the windshield. Two days later they arrested the suspect.
In a joint submission, the Crown outlined the sentence of nine months probation with conditions including a curfew, weapons prohibition, personal counseling and no contact with a co-accused person.
The defence outlined mitigating circumstances including that the youth is attending school, deeply regrets the incident, has no prior record and is taking the sentence very seriously.
Judge Patrick Reis accepted the joint submission noting that the incident illustrates how things can escalate when guns are involved.
