Summer is finally coming to Saskatchewan. The weather is getting warmer, school is coming to a close and people are heading out to their cottages for a relaxing time on the lake. Whether you are fishing, water skiing or just boating this summer, St John Ambulance is here to prepare all travelers for a safe time on the water.

To help you get ready, St John Ambulance has a few tips to remember before getting your toes wet:

1. Take the exam: If operating a motorized water craft, be sure that you have your pleasure craft operator (PCO) card by taking the PCO exam.

It is now the law for every motorized operator to take this exam before heading out on the water. For more information or to take the exam contact the St. John Training Centre at 306 783-4544 0r go to www.freecourse.ca

2. Create a float plan: When heading out onto the water, let someone know where you are going and what time you plan to be back. If you do not arrive when you had planned too, a search party can be activated much quicker.

3. Pack safety equipment: No matter what kind of craft you are taking out onto the lake, be sure you have all of the required safety equipment for your size of boat. Minimum safety equipment includes lifejackets, a bailer, oars, a sound-signaling device, and a heaving line.

4. Take a first aid kit: Incidents can happen when you are far from land. A first aid kit will help ensure that you are able to deal with problems as they arise.

5. Learn first aid: Take a St John Ambulance first aid course to prepare yourself for a summer on the water.

Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. For over 125 years, Canadians have trusted St. John Ambulance for quality first aid training and products.
