Progress made in labour disputes

Three months of rotating strikes by health professionals in the province ended last week with the reaching of a tentative agreement between the Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) and the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO).

Last week also saw the release of the special mediator's report on the dispute between Saskatchewan's teachers and the province. It is expected to form the basis of a temporary agreement between the two parties.

The health workers' agreement includes a 7.5 percent general wage increase over a period of four years. Because the previous contract ended two years ago, the new contract will expire in just two years.

In the teachers' dispute, the mediator's report recommends a 5.5 percent general wage increase over three years with an additional 3.3 to five percent "market adjustment" based on the wages of teachers in other provinces.
