Protz pleads to second trafficking offence

Guilty Plea

A Yorkton man currently serving time for marijuana trafficking has pleaded guilty to additional similar charges.

In Yorkton Provincial Court May 11, Clark Protz received six more months jail time on one count of trafficking, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of production of marijuana and one count of failing to comply with an undertaking.

He will not actually serve any more time than he has remaining on his original sentence because of credit for time served on remand between the two cases.

In 2013, Protz was the subject of a traffic stop near Theodore after Saskatoon police tipped off local RCMP a shipment of marijuana was on its way to Yorkton.

Officers found more than 20 pounds of cannabis in Protz’s SUV. He was released on bail and conditions, but while awaiting trial on those charges was arrested again. He spent 125 days on remand on the new charges.

On November 12, 2013, following a Court of Queen’s Bench trial, Protz was convicted and sentenced on his original charges receiving 13 months custody. An appeal of that conviction was rejected in March.

A trial on the second set of charges was set to begin last week, but Protz pleaded out receiving a six months sentence, but 188 days credit for his remand time.

In addition to the second conviction, he forfeits a large amount of cash and is subject to a 10-year firearms prohibition and DNA order.

Protz will be eligible for release in August.
