For a number of years during the Christmas season, the York Colony Quilters Guild has donated hand crafted Christmas placemats to clients in the Sunrise Health Region Meals on Wheels program. This year's presentation took place on December 7, 2011 with Dora Blahyi, Meals on Wheels client, on hand to accept the donation.
Meals on Wheels is a program coordinated through the Home Care department of Sunrise Health Region and offers nutritious meals to individuals requesting the service. Eligibility for the Meals on Wheels program, which is subsidized through the Government of Saskatchewan, requires clients to complete an assessment to determine the need for the service. To keep the client's fees for the service as low as possible, the program is dependent on a large group of volunteer organizations and individuals who make the deliveries to the clients; without these volunteers, the program would not be possible. Additionally, volunteers with the Quilters Guild donate their time and talents to create the beautiful placemats each year, a gift of Christmas cheer.
"We truly appreciate the generosity shown by the Quilters Guild each year in donating the lovely placemats for our Meals on Wheels Clients," said Nola Walsh, Director of Home Care. "Our clients often remark that getting something so thoughtful and skillfully handmade really brightens their Christmas season."
The donated placemats will be delivered to Meals on Wheels clients throughout the region in the week prior to Christmas.
