As the local unit of the Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans (ANAVETS) starts liquidating its assets today, police confirmed there is a criminal investigation proceeding.
“There will be charges, it’s just a matter of when and who,” said Const. Jeff Nelson, the lead investigator on the file.
Nelson confirmed that alleged wrongdoing occurred at the local level, but was unable to provide details on what exactly happened and who was involved pending the completion of his investigation.
Although details are sketchy, the financial affairs of the organization were in such dire straits, the provincial command decided to disband the local unit and a few weeks ago the venerable institution closed its doors amid rumours of stolen money.
According to Nelson, it was the provincial command that made the complaint to Yorkton municipal RCMP.
ANAVETS has served Yorkton area veterans and the community since 1951. Its clubhouse on Broadway was once a popular lounge where people could engage in pool, darts, shuffleboard and other activities.
Repeated attempts to obtain a statement from the ANAVETS provincial and national commands have gone unanswered.
The liquidation sale continues today through Saturday.
