RCMP see decrease in seatbelt violations

The RCMP Yorkton Regional Traffic Services held roadside checks over May 4th and 5th as part of the Multi Agency Seat Belt Team (MAST) initiative to improve road safety. The result was far fewer tickets than their last seat belt blitz in October.

This May, enforcement officers issued 130 tickets over the two days, 80 of which were for seat belt violations. Back in October, officers gave out over twice as many tickets with a grand total of 278 charges laid.

"Hosting MASTeam here in Yorkton has been very successful," said Sgt. Ian Skinner of Yorkton Regional Traffic Services in a release.

MAST is made up of RCMP, municipal police services, CN Police, CP Police, File Hills Police Service and the provincial Highway Transport Patrol.

Yorkton's seat belt check stops are part of a commitment to make Saskatchewan roads safer.
