It took a change in approach, but the Broadway to King Street Recreation Corridor project was approved as per budget at the regular meeting of Council.
"The total approved budget for the project is $560,000," explained Josh Mickleborough, manager of engineering with the City. " This project is being done in conjunction with Community Development, Parks and Recreation's "Pathway Master Plan."
"The project consists of a pathway and park corridor connecting the existing pathways at King Street near the roundabout to the new skate park and Broadway Avenue. It involves the repurposing of closed roadways and the development of new pathways."
Mickleborough said when tenders closed July 19 only one bid was received, at a price of $669,280.
With the tender over budget "Administration decided to proceed with the project using construction management instead of the original design-bid-build," said Mickleborough.
"Based on the unit rates from G. Ungar Construction and On the Mark Excavating and the time and material estimates for the project the revised estimate for the project is $508,876, plus a 10 per cent contingency for a total of $559,763.60."
Engineering staff will be responsible for the supervision of the project.
The project should be complete by the end of September, weather permitting.
