The City of Yorkton is moving forward with creation of a conceptual plan for a Broadway - King Street Recreation Corridor following a unanimous decision by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.
"It will allow people to walk all the way from Silver Heights to the downtown," offered Gord Shaw, director of Planning & Engineering with the city.
The plan would "use as much as possible the existing infrastructure," creating what Shaw termed "a green ribbon within the community."
The development of the Winchester pathway in 2011 allows residents to walk or bicycle from Silver Heights to King Street. The new corridor would be an extension of that pathway to Broadway Street West.
"The development of the storm pond will allow for a pathway within Brodie Avenue with benches for rest stops or people watching. The installation of a skatepark plaza at the north end of the storm pond allows for more active recreational activity. Administration has included lights along the pathway to ensure that people can feel comfortable," detailed a report circulated to Council Monday.
The pathway would "be on the west side of the Brodie Pond," said Shaw.
The project would include a realignment of Park Street to eliminate the five-way intersection, south of Brodie.
Shaw said addressing the intersection would make moving through the intersection "more certain for our motorists."
A portion of Melville Avenue along Patrick Park would also be closed to traffic and used for pathway, or adjacent green space.
The budget for this project is allocated through the 2012 capital budget, with work planned to be completed this year, going to tender once the concept plan is completed.
