People wanting to make a financial contribution towards helping preserve the old brick mill in Yorkton can now receive a tax receipt through the City following a decision made by Yorkton Council at its regular meeting Monday.
"The Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society is fundraising to preserve the Brick Mill. At this given point in time the Society has not received authorization from Revenue Canada to issue tax receipts for donations. It is felt that having the ability to issue tax receipts would greatly aid the fund raising efforts," explained City Manager David Putz.
"The Society is requesting through Mr. Vern Brown, that the City assist by issuing tax receipts for donations to the Yorkton Brick Mill Society where the donations are made for the purpose of preserving the Brick Mill."
"The City of Yorkton is recognized as a charitable organization for the purposes of issuing tax receipts. In order to issue tax receipts for donations to preserve the Yorkton Brick Mill, Council must pass a resolution which indicates that Council is in support of the project."
As background Putz reminded "In September, Council received a presentation from the Society at which point Council directed the Society to report back to Council within a year with a progress report. At that time Council will consider disposition of the mill structure or a possible further extension based on progress. The City will continue to conduct periodic inspections to ensure that any public safety issues do not develop."
Councillor Ross Fisher, who would ultimately be the one vote against the recommendation, said he had concerns.
"I think at this point in time it's premature," he said. "We haven't decided we're going to preserve the old mill."
Coun. Les Arnelien said he had no problem supporting the recommendation adding "this is very important to their fundraising."
Coun. Chris Wyatt wanted to know if Council would be kept in the loop regarding fundraising progress and plans for the mill.
Putz said regular reports, likely quarterly, could be requested.
