Carpet Land on Broadway Street was damaged in a fire late Saturday night, April 30.

A weekend fire caused extensive damage to Carpet Land on the east end of Broadway Street in Yorkton.

Salesperson Michelle Hubic was notified of the fire at around 11:00 on the night of April 30.

"We came down and the top of the store had a lot of flames coming out of it," she told Yorkton This Week.

Fire crews had the flames extinguished by around 2 a.m. They managed to contain the burn to the front of the store, which will likely need to be rebuilt. The building's roof also suffered heavy damage.

"It could have been worse by far," Hubic said.

Employees were back in the building on Monday morning, but Carpet Land will be closed for the near future. While the warehouse was undamaged, Hubic said that the carpets on-site will not be sold due to smoke exposure.

A preliminary investigation implicates an electric light at the front of the store as the likely cause.

"They figure somehow it short-circuited. Whether it was from the storm, we don't know."

The store's management is now waiting on word from insurance agents for its next step.

"As of right now," said Hubic, "we are closed, and we are waiting to see what's going to happen."
