Saskatchewan's economy had manufacturing sales breaking records in May, landing the province in top spot for year-over-year growth for a second straight month. In a Statistics Canada report released today, Saskatchewan's shipments totalled $1.29 billion, an increase of 16.7 per cent (seasonally adjusted) over May 2012.
"Our province's manufacturers are leaders in the global marketplace because they have built a reputation for producing quality goods that continue to be in high demand around the world," Minister for the Economy Bill Boyd said. "This is the second straight month that our province's manufacturing sales have broken records, which is a direct reflection of the strength and ingenuity of these companies."
From April 2013 to May 2013, manufacturing sales jumped 5.8 per cent (seasonally adjusted). This was the largest percentage growth among the provinces, and well above the national average of 0.7 per cent. The chemical manufacturing sector saw the strongest sales increase for the month, with food manufacturing and machinery manufacturing taking second and third spot, respectively.
"The top shipments for May reflect the diversity of our manufacturing sector in Saskatchewan," Boyd said. "The momentum that we are seeing in this indicator in both April and May lends confidence to manufacturing sales in the months to come."
