Yorkton's Kinsmen Recycling Centre is in the last stages of relocating to a larger facility just down the road from its old one.
In recent weeks, the Saskatchewan Abilities Council has been moving equipment from the recycling centre's former 2,500 square-foot site at 144 Ball Road to a new 8,000 square-foot location at 180 Ball Road. The new facility should be operational by the end of the week.
"This means our capacity will be increased, our process will be more efficient, and it should be less of a cost for recycling in the long run," explains local operations manager Stephen Rosowsky.
The Kinsmen Recycling Centre currently processes about 2,200 tonnes of paper, cardboard, aluminum, glass, and plastic each year. Rosowsky expects the centre's capacity to reach 10 to 15,000 tonnes per year in the new facility without a need for increased staffing.
"It's got much more room for storage-that's our biggest advantage. With our previous centre, what came in basically had to go out quickly because there wasn't much room for the next load."
The new facility accepts commercial drop-offs only, meaning that the general public can no longer bring materials directly to the recycling centre. Residents should make use of the curbside pickup program or one of the five community drop-off bins located around the city.
The move does not affect the SARCAN depot, which previously shared its building with the Kinsmen Recycling Centre. Rosowsky says the Abilities Council will find a use for the empty space at 144 Ball Road soon.
