Canadian Red Cross and SaskCentral today announced that effective immediately, cash donations to help Saskatchewan residents devastated by recent disasters will be accepted at participating Saskatchewan credit unions until July 22, 2011.

Recent heavy rains have caused significant flooding of the Souris River in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan. Hundreds of families have been evacuated and will face challenges putting their lives back together. This is just the latest severe weather incident that has seen over 3,000 Saskatchewan people evacuated to date - over 1,800 due to floods and over 1,200 due to forest fires.

"Red Cross has been very busy this spring supporting families affected by disasters across the province and will continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead," says Cindy Fuchs, Saskatchewan Provincial Director for the Canadian Red Cross. "We appreciate the support of Saskatchewan credit unions that makes it even easier for our residents to support Red Cross disaster operations here in Saskatchewan."

The Canadian Red Cross relies on generous Canadians and corporations to support families impacted by disaster. The assistance provided by Red Cross does not duplicate other available assistance or services and is designed to ensure that essential needs are met and families receive the support they need to recover from disaster.

Saskatchewan residents can give online at www.redcross.ca, call toll-free at 1-800-418-1111, or visit their local Red Cross office or any Saskatchewan credit union branch.

Cheques should be earmarked Western Canada Severe Weather - Saskatchewan disasters.

Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will help support families as they recover from disaster.

This support may include household repair and clean-up materials, replacement items for children such as cribs, occupational and transportation support and replacement of essential health items.
