Saskatchewan’s month-to-month growth in the retail sector for June 2016 outpaced all other jurisdictions in Canada, according to figures released by Statistics Canada today.
Saskatchewan’s sales were more than $1.5 billion for the month, an increase of 2.1 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) over May 2016, easily the highest growth rate among the provinces.
“One of the benchmarks of an economy is the state of retail sales, and this increase is a positive indicator of other factors such as consumer demand and confidence,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “When Saskatchewan businesses are seeing increased activity of this nature, it reflects well on the overall economic environment in communities across the province.”
Nationally, month-over-month retail sales declined from May to June by an average of 0.1 per cent. Retail sales in Saskatchewan for June 2016 increased 2.7 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) over June 2015, which was equal to the national average for that period.
