The head of the Yorkton General Investigations Section (GIS) retired last week leading to a shuffling of RCMP command in the city.
Sgt. James Morton led the Yorkton GIS for the last six years coming full circle from the beginning of his career as a street officer and GIS investigator in Yorkton. In the intervening 20-odd years, he worked a variety of posts including with the provincial major crimes unit in Regina and federal GIS.
In recent months, Morton has been in the news frequently related to a number of significant drug busts in the Yorkton area.
He said he had an opportunity to take a promotion, but did not want to relocate from Yorkton. The day after he left the RCMP he took a new role as Sherriff at Court of Queen's Bench.
Sgt. Rob Laurent, currently operations NCO for the Yorkton municipal RCMP detachment will take over from Morton as head of GIS October 21.
An "F" Division spokesperson said a replacement for Laurent is yet to be named. She said the position is currently open to Sergeants seeking a lateral transfer.
If it cannot be filled that way they will look at staffing it via promotion.
