SARCAN Recycling held a customer appreciation day Friday, celebrating 25 years of recycling in Saskatchewan. Staff members were on hand with complimentary beverages and cookies and offered visitors a chance to spin the wheel, answer a SARCAN related trivia question and win free prizes.
"In the last three-to-five years the number of inquiries we get on what can be recycled has definitely increased. People are much more aware of recycling then they were when we opened," says Ray Sass, regional manager.
"The biggest change we've seen since 1988 is the additional containers that are accepted. We started with only aluminum cans but it has grown to include a number of containers," he adds.
So what exactly does SARCAN accept?
You can return for deposit containers such as aluminum cans, tetra boxes, glass bottles and jars, plastic containers and paper cartons. Milk containers can be recycled outside the doors of SARCAN but do not qualify for a refund.
SARCAN also offers a paint exchange program where visitors can leave, or take, partially used tins of paint. You can also drop of, free of charge, electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, fax machines or telephones for recycling. SARCAN is located on 144 Ball Road and is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Friday's over lunch.
Yorkton SARCAN processes 8 ½ million containers each year and approximately 250 people come through their doors each day.
