The rollout for SaskTel’s infiNET service has begun. Starting July 6, the first homes in the city will be able to sign up for the new service. The plan is to have the entire city eligible for infiNET by the end of 2017.
The service uses a new protocol called FTTP, or fibre to the premises, which uses fibre optic cable to provide internet service. The advantage of this is speed – up to 260 Mbps downloading and 60 Mbps uploading according to a release provided by SaskTel, though actual speeds will depend on the internet plan chosen by the customer. SaskTel will also use the increased bandwidth to improve their MaxTV service, which will allow for more set top boxes within a home and more high definition content.
“infiNET’s arrival in Yorkton is another example of SaskTel’s commitment to providing the people of Saskatchewan with world class telecommunications services,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel. “With the increasing importance of the Internet in our lives, infiNET is one more tool that will allow the businesses and residents of Yorkton to continue thriving.”
Yorkton is the next city to benefit from the $670 million FTTP program that will deploy fibre directly to homes and business by upgrading SaskTel’s broadband network across Saskatchewan’s nine largest cities. The goal of the program is to improve infrastructure as people use increasing amounts of bandwidth through their internet and television.
The FTTP program is part of SaskTel’s commitment to invest $1.4 billion across Saskatchewan through 2021.
