Fire and police investigators believe a fire at St. Mary's School June 17 was arson.
Fortunately, by the time the fire department arrived at the scene, the blaze, which affected an outside wall, had not had time to spread to more flammable parts of the building. Firefighters were easily able to knock down the flames.
Investigators found traces of gasoline at the scene indicating a suspicious origin for the fire, said Trevor Morrissey, fire chief.
Morrissey would not indicate if they had any suspects, but said the investigation is ongoing.
"We're following up with information gathered on scene," he said.
According to the Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners latest report, Fire Losses in Canada (2007) arson was the third leading cause of fires in Canada accounting for 11 per cent of all structure fires. Arson was the second leading cause of fire-related deaths (10 per cent) and third leading cause of fire-related injuries (eight per cent).
