The Good Spirit School Division is introducing a new awards program this fall to recognize students who have made a positive impact on their community.
Presentations made by student representatives to the Board of Education at its monthly meetings were the inspiration for the new awards, says Director of Education Dwayne Reeve.
"One of the things that really caught the board's attention is the amount of good work our students are doing in the community, and they wanted to recognize that."
The result was the Student of Distinction Awards unveiled earlier this month. In conjunction with Education Week (October 16 to 22), the administration will choose one student at each of the division's 28 schools as the recipients of the first set of awards.
The staff of each school will submit a short list of nominees to the selection committee by the end of September. Students of all ages will be considered.
"We're looking for those children who really are positive community members," says Reeve. "It might be the student who excels and contributes significantly in their local 4-H club, or it may be someone who happens to take a lead role in their local figure skating or perhaps their minor hockey in terms of helping out or assisting with younger participants."
The administration is excited about finding a new way to recognize students who excel in areas other than sports and academics, adds Reeve.
