Winter Clothes

Yorkton Crossing Retirement Community will be extending a helping hand to the those in need this winter by collecting gently used clean winter apparel. The Warm up to Winter Blitz will begin on Oct 16 and run thru to Oct 30. All coats, hats, scarfs and gloves will be donated to the Sign program “Caring Closet” and the “Turning Point Program” through the Sunrise Public Health Dept.

Yorkton Crossing challenged themselves to come up with a project that would give their residents and staff an opportunity to give back to the community in a worthy way that would benefit the most needy in the community. Thus the Warm up to Winter Blitz was initiated. With so many incoming residents going through downsizing it became clear that coats were items that were often too bulky or too many to be needed any more and so the idea was born to find a place for them.

Yorkton Crossing chose to support the Society of the Involvement of Good Neighbors “Caring Closet” because it is a non-profit program, committed to building healthier individuals, families and communities by providing women with clothing and accessories to foster self esteem that can lead to employment and opportunity. The Sunrise Public Health “Turning Point Program” which is also housed in the SIGN building provides the outreach to our highly marginalized population with mental health and addiction issues. Their goal is to increase access to health care and related services for a socially vulnerable and traditionally “hard to reach” population.

When Yorkton Crossing spoke to Shelley Zoerb Program Manager for the Family Preservation Program at SIGN, they were greeted with “Oh yes! the need is always great for outerwear” and once they heard about the numbers of people accessing the facility and programs provided by this local organization they felt that they could do their part as a collection depot during the Warm up to Winter Blitz.

Yorkton Crossing would like to invite the public to participate by donating their clean used winter wear during business hours at 348 Morrison Drive from Oct 16 to Oct 30th. The donations are aimed for adults but they will not turn down children or youth clothing if the public wishes to donate them.

There are always people in need of good warm clothing during our long Saskatchewan winters and the hope is that by doing this collection that they can do their share by spreading the warmth.
