A new self-help book by an author with local connections debuts at Coles this week.

Guy Scholz grew up in Langenburg and went on to be an author, pastor, educator and a USA National Arena Curling champion.

Scholz will be at the book store Saturday, June 6 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to sign copies of his new book The Masterpiece Within: Five Key Life Skills To Becoming a Living Work of Art.

Written with American model, country music artist and actor Claudia Church, the book builds on the two authors’ separate work developing programs to help people unlock their life potential.

In The Masterpiece Within, Scholz and Church have distilled their lifetime of counseling experience into five skills: Choosing Wisely; Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life Story; Discovering and Developing Life Bliss; Balancing Emotions, Spirit, Mind and Body; and Making a Difference.

More than a decade in the making, Scholz said the desired outcome of following the program is more modest than a lot books of this type. It is not about getting rich or becoming famous, but about finding what is right for the individual. By starting with that foundation, he said, it can help you avoid choices that lead down the wrong path.

Another difference with this book, he thinks, is that it is less academic and more practical and personal. Each section features anecdotal stories from real life and pop culture (in which both authors are very much immersed) that demonstrate the principle. They then outline some tools people can use to keep working on developing the traits and provide exercises to do as the reader goes through the book.

Finally, he said, what he and Church believe sets The Masterpiece Within apart is that it makes no claims of being a cure-all. It is a guide to the ongoing process of being happy, whatever that means to the individual.

Please see next week’s edition of Yorkton This Week for a more in-depth profile of Scholz and his philosophy.
